These terms govern your use of the Karibu Safari Journal app and website. They are a contract between you and Karibu Camps & Lodges Limited. Please read them — they are short and written in plain English on purpose.
By creating an account or using the app you confirm you have read these terms and agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
Karibu Safari Journal helps you identify wildlife you photograph, keep a journal of your safari sightings, browse parks and lodges, and travel with a digital companion for your trip. We add new features regularly. We may also retire features that aren't working as planned.
When you scan a photo, our system tries to identify the species using Google's Gemini Vision AI. The result is a best-effort guess, not a definitive identification. Do not rely on it for any decision where misidentification could cause harm (medical, scientific publication, legal, safety, or otherwise). If you are unsure about a species, consult a qualified naturalist or guide.
Don't use the AI feature to identify people, vehicles, weapons, or anything other than wildlife. If you do, we may suspend your account.
Each AI scan costs one or more tokens. We give every new account a generous starting balance, free of charge. Tokens are an internal allowance designed to keep the AI service responsive for all users; they are not money and have no cash value.
Partner lodges and travel agents may offer additional tokens through voucher codes. Voucher codes:
We may adjust token amounts, scan costs, or voucher rules to keep the service sustainable. If we make a change that materially reduces what you've already paid for, we'll grandfather your existing balance.
The photos, notes, captions, GPS records, and trip information you put into the app are yours. We do not claim ownership of any of it.
You give us a limited licence to:
This licence ends when you delete the content, except where we are required by law to keep it (for example, for tax records on voucher transactions).
You confirm that your content does not infringe anyone else's rights and that you have permission to share anything you upload (for example, if a photo includes another person identifiable in the frame).

We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these rules. Where the breach is minor we'll usually warn you first; where it endangers other users or our systems we'll act immediately.
Everything in the app that is not your content belongs to us or to our licensors — the app itself, the brand, the Karibu Safari Journal name, our logo and visual identity, the park information we have curated, lodge content, our software, our AI prompts, the underlying code, and so on. You may use the app for your personal, non-commercial enjoyment. You may not copy our content, brand, or design without our written permission.
How we handle your personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy. Please read it.
We work hard to keep the app available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. Internet, GPS, AI services, and our servers can all have outages. During peak hours (typically early morning and early evening at camp) demand on the AI service is highest; the token system exists to keep things responsive but cannot eliminate every queue or hiccup.
You can stop using the app at any time and delete your account from Settings → Danger Zone → Delete my account. We may suspend or terminate your account if you breach these terms, if we are required to by law, or if we discontinue the service. If we close the service we will give you reasonable notice and a way to export your data.
Beyond what is required by law and what we say in the rest of these terms, the app is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. We do not warrant that the app will be error-free, that AI identifications will be accurate, that GPS readings will be precise, or that lodge or park information will be perfectly up to date. Always check current park rules, prices, and safety advice with the relevant park authority or your lodge.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Karibu Camps & Lodges Limited and its directors, employees, and partners are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or relating to your use of the app. Where law does not allow us to exclude liability, our total aggregate liability to you is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) USD 100.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.
If your use of the app, or content you put into it, causes a third party to bring a claim against us, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold us harmless against that claim, including reasonable legal fees, except where the claim arises from our breach of these terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of Tanzania. If we have a dispute we will first try to settle it informally. If we cannot, you and we agree that the courts of Dar es Salaam have exclusive jurisdiction — except that consumers in the EU and UK may also have the option of bringing proceedings in their home country, as their local law allows.
If we change these terms in a material way we will notify you in the app and, where appropriate, by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the app after the effective date counts as your acceptance of the new terms. If you do not agree with the changes, please stop using the app and delete your account.
